Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a disturbing incident in Santa Rosa, a police officer ended up with a broken eye socket after a violent altercation with a suspect he was detaining. The confrontation occurred following a reported family disturbance in the 400 block of Walkam Place on Wednesday evening.

Multiple officers responded to the scene after receiving reports of a man involved in a domestic dispute fleeing the residence. Witnesses informed the police that the man, later identified as Paulino Garfias, had pushed his 60-year-old grandmother during an argument, causing her to fall and hit her head on a wall. The grandmother was later taken to the hospital for treatment.

One of the officers spotted Garfias walking along Dutton Avenue near South Avenue and attempted to approach him. Garfias tried to escape but was tackled by the officer after running only 200 feet. The situation escalated when Garfias managed to get on top of the officer and repeatedly punched him in the face before fleeing the scene.

The officer pursued Garfias on foot and eventually subdued him with the use of a stun gun. Garfias was then arrested and taken into custody on charges of assault and battery, resisting an executive officer, and battery on a peace officer. He is currently being held at the Sonoma County jail in Santa Rosa on an enhanced $110,000 bail.

Legal Proceedings

Garfias is scheduled to appear in Sonoma County Superior Court in Santa Rosa on Friday morning to face the charges against him. Meanwhile, the injured officer received treatment at a hospital for a fractured facial bone and has been released. However, he is on leave as he recovers from his injuries.

According to court records, Garfias has a previous conviction in 2019 for three misdemeanor charges, including hit and run causing property damage, obstructing or resisting a police officer, and battery on a peace officer.

Statement from Santa Rosa Police Chief

Addressing the incident, Santa Rosa Police Chief John Cregan expressed concern over the increasing number of repeat offenders who show little regard for the consequences of their actions, especially when it comes to assaulting law enforcement officers. Chief Cregan highlighted the department’s commitment to providing enhanced training and supervision to ensure the safety of officers in challenging situations.

He commended the injured officer for demonstrating the training and skills necessary to overcome the resistance of the offender in this particular case.
