The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call on Tuesday evening regarding a jet ski versus boat collision near the Gass Lake Channel. The jet ski, carrying 16-year-old Sarina Vootkur and 13-year-old Elle Kim, crashed into a boat operated by a 55-year-old man.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the jet ski was travelling at a high speed directly towards the boat, leaving the man with no option to avoid the collision. Despite wearing life vests, both girls were knocked unconscious upon impact and thrown into the water.
The four individuals on the boat immediately sprang into action, rescuing the girls from the water, administering first aid, and contacting emergency services. While one girl was brought back to shore by the boat operator, the other was taken in by a passing vessel.
Tragic Outcome
Despite the efforts to save them, both girls were pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital. The Lake County Coroner’s Office determined that their deaths were caused by blunt force injuries sustained during the collision.
