A man from Leesburg has been arrested following an incident where he allegedly battered his mother and stepfather and barricaded himself inside their home during a mental health crisis. The individual in question has been identified as Simon Weber, aged 37.
Incident Details
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for assistance at a residence in Leesburg after receiving reports of Weber experiencing a mental health crisis and causing damage to the property around 4:08 a.m. on Wednesday. Prior to the arrival of law enforcement, it was revealed that the victims were separated, and Weber had barricaded himself inside the property.
Upon reaching the scene, deputies spoke with a 65-year-old woman, who explained that Weber was in distress and destroying items within the house after being informed that she was planning to move. In response to her attempts to leave with her car keys and phone, Weber intervened, taking the items from her and throwing them into the pool. Subsequently, he pushed the woman in the chest area before she sought refuge at a neighbor’s residence.
Another victim, a 66-year-old man, corroborated the events, stating that Weber was in the midst of a mental health episode and causing damage within the home. After throwing the phone into the pool, Weber approached the man, provoking a physical altercation by jabbing him in the chest and goading him to retaliate.
De-escalation and Arrest
Despite attempts to communicate with Weber while he was barricaded inside the property, he refused to comply with law enforcement’s instructions. Consequently, deputies were compelled to enter the premises and facilitate his surrender.
It was revealed that the first victim is Weber’s biological mother, while the second victim is his stepfather. The family has resided together for the entirety of Weber’s life, establishing a domestic relationship among the individuals.
Following the incident, photographs were taken of the damage inside the property, with an estimated cost of approximately £10,000. Weber was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of battery on individuals aged 65 or older (domestic), deprivation of 911 (domestic), and resisting arrest without violence. He was transported to Lake County Jail without any further incident, with bond set at £8,500.
This incident highlights the importance of mental health awareness and the provision of appropriate support services to individuals in crisis to prevent such occurrences from escalating into violence.
