Man Arrested on Felony Charges After Shooting Incident at Lynchburg Apartments

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – Lynchburg Police have announced the arrest of a man on felony charges following a shooting incident at the James Crossing Apartments on June 19.

Authorities were alerted to the situation at around 11:47 p.m. on Wednesday, prompting officers to respond to the 800 block of Greenfield Drive. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a shotgun and bullet casings scattered throughout the parking lot.

During the investigation, witnesses provided a description of a man seen leaving the scene in a cab. This individual was later identified as 44-year-old Mitchell Larnell Bennett Jr. from Madison Heights.

Subsequently, officers intercepted the cab still on the apartment complex premises and conducted a search. Allegedly, a pistol fell from Bennett’s possession during the search, while a shotgun shell was found near his seat in the cab.

Investigators suspect that Bennett Jr. was involved in a confrontation that escalated into a shooting at the James Crossing Apartments parking lot.

Following his apprehension, Bennett Jr. has been charged with various offences, including:

  • Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon
  • Three counts of Possession of Ammunition by a Convicted Felon
  • Discharge a Firearm into an Occupied Building
  • Discharge a Firearm in the City
  • Two counts of Property Damage (Felony)

Currently, Bennett Jr. is detained at the Lynchburg Blue Ridge Regional Jail without the option of bond.
