LONDON (CBS) — A devastating incident unfolded in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago as a 7-year-old boy tragically passed away in the aftermath of an apartment fire that also claimed the life of another individual and left three others injured.
The heart-wrenching incident occurred in the early hours of the morning at a three-story apartment building located in the 2400 block of East 78th Street. The blaze erupted at around 2:30 a.m. on a Saturday, engulfing the premises in chaos and destruction.
Upon the arrival of emergency responders, a grim discovery was made as a 24-year-old man was found deceased at the scene. The authorities swiftly attended to the four other individuals affected by the fire, including two young boys aged 2 and 7.
Both children were rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital for urgent medical care. Tragically, the 7-year-old, identified as Adrian M. Matias by the Medical Examiner’s Office, succumbed to his injuries after initially being listed in critical condition.
Conversely, the 2-year-old was reported to be in stable condition. Additionally, a 27-year-old man was transported to Trinity Hospital, while a 24-year-old woman received treatment at the University of Chicago Medical Center, with both individuals listed in a satisfactory state.
The devastating fire resulted in the displacement of twenty-three individuals, leaving a community reeling from the tragic aftermath.
