BRONX – New York City bodega owners are once again urging authorities to take action in order to curb the rising gun violence in the city, following a horrific incident where a bodega worker was shot in broad daylight. The incident took place at the Gourmet Deli on Webster and 183rd Street, where a 33-year-old clerk, identified as Joseph Lewis, was shot in the stomach.

Fernando Mateo, representing the United Bodegas of America, provided details of the incident, stating that the victim had a confrontation with a customer who had caused a mess while handling ice from a refrigerator. Following the argument, the suspect retrieved a handgun from his car and shot Lewis outside the store.

Speaking at a press conference after the shooting, Mateo expressed his concerns over the safety of bodega workers, emphasizing the need for increased security measures such as cameras, panic buttons, and bulletproof doors inside bodegas. He also called for the reinstatement of controversial stop-and-frisk policies and suggested that bodega owners arm themselves for self-defense.

“It is unacceptable that we have to live in fear,” Mateo stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation. “We need to ensure that our bodega owners have the means to protect themselves and their communities.”

The search for the gunman is ongoing, with authorities working tirelessly to apprehend the suspect and bring him to justice. In the meantime, bodega owners and workers are left grappling with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence, underscoring the need for immediate action to address the escalating gun violence in the Bronx.
