MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man has been taken into custody by the Merced County Sheriff’s Office after being accused of igniting multiple small fires in the area.

On a recent Wednesday afternoon, Sheriff Vern Warnke was patrolling in Winton when he noticed smoke rising in the vicinity. Despite dispatch being unaware of any reported fires, Sheriff Warnke decided to investigate the source of the smoke.

Upon arriving at the intersection of Santa Fe Drive and Center Street, Sheriff Warnke observed several small fires that seemed to have just been set. Following the trail of fires, he witnessed a man, later identified as Robert Vega Jr., starting another fire.

Deputies Lopez and Zaragoza promptly arrived on the scene as the suspect attempted to flee. After a brief pursuit on foot, the law enforcement officers managed to apprehend Vega and he was subsequently taken into custody.

Arrest on Suspicion of Arson

Following his arrest, Robert Vega Jr. was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of arson. The Merced County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the incident to determine the full extent of the damage caused by the fires allegedly set by Vega.
