Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Weld County Sheriff’s Offices has identified the remains of a man found 24 years ago in a Greeley field as Christopher Scott Case, according to a news release on June 5.

Back in February 2000, a Greeley man stumbled upon the remains in a field near E. 8th Street in Greeley while taking his dog for a walk. Weld County deputies and investigators were called to the scene. Following an autopsy of the human remains, no evidence of foul play was discovered, according to officials.

“This case was as cold as they get. There was no evidence other than the human remains. If not for forensic genetic genealogy, the Christopher Scott Case would not have ever been identified,” shared Weld County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Detective Byron Kastilahn.

“After learning about forensic genetic genealogy in 2020, I wanted to get all our unidentified human remains (UHR) cases into that process. So far, we have identified three UHR cases, and I hope they can all be identified eventually.”

Further examination of the man’s remains by an anthropologist revealed that he was a white male aged between 35-50 years old and stood at five feet, four inches tall. However, due to the state of decomposition, the man’s body weight could not be determined.

There was no clear cause or manner of death or any signs of indirect trauma found due to the condition of the male’s body, as noted by officials.

DNA and Genealogy Breakthrough

Initially named John Doe 2000 when the remains were discovered on Valentine’s Day in 2000, the unidentified male remained a mystery for over two decades.

In 2022, DNA from the remains was submitted to a forensic genetic genealogy database, which led to the identification of potential relatives in Nevada. These relatives provided their DNA, ultimately aiding in solving the case.

In December 2023, Detective Kastilahn received a significant breakthrough when the genetic genealogy testing yielded a tentative identification of John Doe as Christopher Scott Case. Additional genetic testing was conducted to confirm the DNA match, which indeed proved positive.

According to Case’s half-brother, who last saw him in 1998 in Nevada, Christopher had been residing in Rock Springs, Wyoming before his untimely death.

“Regardless of the passage of time, our dedication to resolving all cold cases remains unwavering. In cases such as Christopher’s, we tirelessly pursue investigative leads, utilise forensic tools, and strive for identification so that his story can be told, and his loved ones can find peace in obtaining the answers they deserve,” stated Steve Reams, Weld County Sheriff.
