Gunshots shattered the peace of a south Minneapolis apartment, leaving a woman hiding in fear as she discovered two men fatally wounded inside. Her partner, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head, was barely clinging to life as she desperately called 911 for help.

Recently released transcripts provide a harrowing glimpse into the chaotic moments before police arrived at the scene of a mass shooting in Whittier on May 30. The incident claimed the lives of four people, including Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell, and left three others injured.

The transcripts reveal a series of frantic emergency calls from bystanders, witnesses, and victims who witnessed the tragedy unfold on a busy Blaisdell Avenue street. One caller described ramming the suspected gunman as he attempted to rob a man of his scooter, while another recounted being shot while driving through the intersection with their toddler in the car.

The initial 911 call came in around 5:15 p.m., with a woman pleading for help after finding her boyfriend unresponsive with severe head trauma. Another man was discovered dead in the kitchen, but the identity of the shooter remained unknown.

Officer Mitchell, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty, never made it to the apartment. He stopped his squad car just over a block away to render aid to two wounded men in the street, only to be ambushed and fatally shot by the suspect.

In the chaos that ensued before the officers’ arrival, the suspect attempted to steal a man’s electric scooter before being rammed by a passing motorist. The suspect, identified as Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed, was later killed in a shootout with responding officers.

Multiple witnesses reported seeing Mohamed firing upon passing motorists, including a man with his young son in the car. The driver, Alexander G. Hage, was struck by gunfire while trying to seek help, but thankfully his child remained unharmed.

As the investigation continues, Chief Brian O’Hara has agreed to temporarily withhold body camera footage at the request of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) to avoid interfering with the ongoing investigation into the double homicide inside the apartment.

The tragic events that unfolded on that fateful day have left the community reeling and searching for answers as they mourn the loss of those who lost their lives in this senseless act of violence.
