A group of residents in Queens took matters into their own hands early Tuesday morning, apprehending a suspect in the rape of a 13-year-old schoolgirl. The citizens restrained the man, identified as Christian Inga, 25, of Jackson Heights, until police arrived on the scene.
Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny of the NYPD revealed at a press conference that at least 10 people joined forces to capture Inga after recognising him from images shared by the police to the media. Inga, a native of Ecuador who illegally entered the U.S. through Eagle Pass, Texas, in June 2021, is accused of kidnapping the schoolgirl and her 14-year-old male friend in a Queens park before sexually assaulting the girl at knifepoint.
The shocking incident prompted a widespread search for Inga, who sported a distinctive wolf tattoo. Kenny confirmed that Inga, also known as Christian Giovanni Inga-Landi, is facing charges of first-degree rape, sexual abuse, kidnapping, and other criminal offences. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday.
Following his arrest, Inga confessed to the police, after waiving his Miranda rights, that he had a drug addiction and had never committed a similar crime before, according to Kenny. The successful apprehension of Inga was credited to the dissemination of his image on social media, newspapers, and television, as well as an accurate police sketch.
Public Tips Lead to Arrest
Kenny praised the detailed tips provided by the public, which helped officials learn about Inga’s social media presence and distinctive chest tattoo. While Inga had one previous arrest in Texas for an unspecified offence, he had no prior arrests in New York City.
However, Inga had received three summonses in the city for fare evasion, trespassing, and possessing an open alcohol container. NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban commended the public’s swift action in aiding the arrest.
“There is no greater force multiplier than the eyes and ears of an engaged and fully involved public,” Caban stated.
