A 32-year-old man, Jonathon Gounaris, is facing a total of twelve charges in connection with a shooting incident in Ogle County that resulted in three members of law enforcement being hospitalized. The charges include four counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, three counts of aggravated battery, and two counts of possession without a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID). The Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office officially announced these charges on June 18.
Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reported that law enforcement responded to a call on June 12 at a residence in the 400 block of Wild Rice Lane in Lost Lake. The call indicated that an individual was making threats of suicide and homicide. Despite repeated attempts to communicate with the individual, later identified as Gounaris, law enforcement decided to send an emergency response team into the home.
Upon entering the residence, Gounaris opened fire on the emergency response team, resulting in injuries to three members. In the exchange of gunfire, Gounaris was also shot by law enforcement. Two of the injured team members were transported to KSB Hospital in Dixon for treatment, while the third member was airlifted to a hospital in Rockford for surgery. Gounaris was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment as well.
During the subsequent investigation, detectives discovered multiple firearms, a fixed-blade knife, pepper spray, and ballistic armor inside the home. The Illinois State Police has taken over the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
