The Cook County Medical Examiner has identified the victim of a fatal boating accident that occurred near Winnetka on Monday. Cristen Bolan, 53, tragically lost her life after a sailboat she was on capsized late Sunday night, leading to a search and rescue operation by local authorities.
Details of the Incident
According to reports, Bolan and another woman set sail on a 12-foot sailboat from Evanston and encountered rough waters near Winnetka at dusk. The boat capsized, prompting one of the passengers to swim approximately 2 miles to Tower Road Beach to seek help. Both women were wearing life preservers during the incident, and the boat was later found 2 to 3 miles offshore.
During the early hours of Monday, the second woman managed to make it to shore and notified authorities about Bolan’s disappearance. A search and rescue mission was launched by the Winnetka Fire Department, Coast Guard station in Wilmette, and neighbouring municipalities to locate Bolan and the sailboat.
Recovery Efforts and Tragic Outcome
The Coast Guard successfully located Bolan a mile offshore north of Winnetka and transported her to Montrose Harbor in Chicago. Despite the efforts of first responders who performed CPR during the journey, Bolan unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Chicago Fire Department.
Investigation and Further Information
As of now, the medical examiner has not disclosed Bolan’s hometown or the exact cause of her death. However, her LinkedIn profile indicates that she was a product and marketing manager at a Chicago-based company called bioMérieux and held a master’s degree in marketing from Northwestern University.
This tragic incident is unrelated to other water-related emergencies in the area, including the search for a missing swimmer near Oak Street Beach and Navy Pier in Chicago’s “playpen” area. It also does not involve the incident of another swimmer rescued from Montrose Harbor on the same morning.
