A heartbreaking incident occurred in upstate New York on Father’s Day, as a man lost his life while attempting to retrieve his keys from Oneida Lake in the town of Hastings. The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office reported that the tragic event unfolded near the pier just south of the Waterfront Tavern at approximately 9:51 a.m. on Sunday.

The marine patrol of the Sheriff’s Office responded swiftly to the distress call and found two individuals struggling in the water. Assistance from the Brewerton Fire Department was also called in to aid in the rescue operation.

One of the men, identified as 42-year-old Wattie Cappers from Syracuse, was successfully rescued and taken to Upstate Hospital in stable condition. Unfortunately, the second man, 44-year-old Anthony Davis from Clay, was unable to be saved and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The incident unfolded as the three men were enjoying a Father’s Day fishing trip when Davis accidentally dropped his keys into the lake. In an attempt to retrieve them, he entered the water but found himself struggling to return to shore. Cappers courageously jumped in after him to offer assistance, but both men found themselves in distress.

The quick response of the deputies who heard their cries for help was crucial in the rescue operation. The sheriff’s office has launched an investigation into the tragic event to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
