A tragic incident unfolded on Father’s Day in upstate New York as a man lost his life while attempting to retrieve his keys from Oneida Lake in the town of Hastings.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office received a distress call about two individuals struggling in the water near the pier just south of the Waterfront Tavern at approximately 9:51 a.m. on Sunday.

Responding swiftly to the emergency, members of the Brewerton Fire Department joined forces with the marine patrol to assist in the rescue operation.

During the rescue efforts, 42-year-old Wattie Cappers from Syracuse was successfully retrieved and taken to Upstate Hospital in stable condition, while 44-year-old Anthony Davis from Clay tragically lost his life despite the valiant efforts of the fire department divers.

The fatal incident occurred when Davis, Cappers, and another companion were out fishing on Father’s Day and Davis accidentally dropped his keys into the water. In a bid to retrieve them, Davis entered the lake but struggled to return to shore.

Witnessing his friend’s distress, Cappers bravely jumped into the water to rescue Davis, but unfortunately, both men found themselves unable to make it back to land. Their cries for help alerted nearby deputies, leading to their rescue efforts.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the tragic event to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
