CHENNAI: A shocking incident unfolded in Kancheepuram town on Monday afternoon when a 31-year-old woman constable, identified as M Dillirani, was brutally attacked with a sickle by her husband, Meghanathan, in broad daylight. The constable, who was in uniform, sustained severe injuries on her left shoulder and collapsed on the spot, bleeding profusely. Prompt action by bystanders saw her rushed to the Kancheepuram Government Hospital for urgent medical attention, while her assailant fled the scene on his two-wheeler.
According to police reports, Dillirani, who is attached to the Vishnu Kanchi police station, was on her way home from work when Meghanathan intercepted her, sparking a heated argument that escalated into a violent attack with the weapon. Fortunately, the constable is now in stable condition and is on the path to recovery.
A senior police official revealed that the tragic incident stemmed from a longstanding domestic dispute between the estranged couple. “The two had been living separately for the past six months and had minimal communication. Meghanathan is currently evading authorities, with his phone switched off. Efforts are underway to locate him, and investigations into the matter are ongoing,” the official stated. A case has been registered by the Sivakanchi police to further pursue the matter.

Leader of Opposition and AIADMK General Secretary, Edappadi K Palaniswami, strongly condemned the heinous attack on the constable. Expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Tamil Nadu, Palaniswami emphasised the need for a comprehensive investigation into the incident. “Regardless of the underlying reasons, the assault on a police officer in uniform with a sickle in broad daylight is a disturbing development that demands swift justice,” he remarked.
