Brian Steel, the head of FOP Capital City Lodge 9, has reported that an officer with the Columbus Division of Police sustained serious injuries after being punched in the face by a naked man in the Brewery District. The officer’s orbital bone was broken in the attack and he will require surgery to repair the damage.
According to court records from Franklin County Municipal Court, the incident occurred when officers responded to a call about a naked man in the area of South High and Sycamore streets. Upon arrival, they encountered 35-year-old Dasean Barnes, who was only wearing a pair of loose cargo shorts that were falling down.
When officers attempted to detain Barnes, he fled and a chase ensued. During the pursuit, Barnes allegedly punched the officer on the left side of his face, causing visible injuries. Brian Steel confirmed that the officer suffered a broken orbital bone as a result of the assault.
Following the altercation, Barnes was taken into custody and charged with assault on a police officer, as well as a probation violation – both of which are classified as felonies according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office website.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face while carrying out their duties. The Columbus Division of Police is yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but the assault on the officer highlights the risks that officers encounter on a daily basis.
