Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A man from Ukiah has been taken into custody on suspicion of arson after allegedly igniting a blaze in a field close to the airport, as per a report from the Ukiah Police Department.

Authorities from the UPD were alerted to the incident at around 12:15 p.m. on June 13, responding to reports of a grass fire at 1320 Airport Road, located near the airport and the city’s Corp Yard along the railway tracks.

The fire was spotted by a Battalion Chief from the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority, who happened to be in the vicinity at the time and swiftly intervened to extinguish the flames. Upon arrival, the Chief observed a lone individual, later identified as 24-year-old Ukiah resident Oscar Cabezas-Tafoya, attempting to walk away from the scene.

Given that Cabezas-Tafoya was the sole person present at the time of the incident, he was detained for questioning. Additional personnel from the UVFA arrived promptly to contain the fire, which had consumed a 20-by-20-square-foot area of dry grass.

During the investigation, UPD officers and UVFA Arson Investigators discovered physical evidence suggesting that the fire was deliberately or accidentally ignited. Following an interview with Cabezas-Tafoya, where he allegedly admitted to starting the fire, he was placed under arrest and taken to Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of recklessly causing a fire.

The UPD extended their appreciation to the UVFA for their cooperation throughout the investigation.
