BELL COUNTY, Ky. (WATE) — A shooting incident at a residence in Bell County, Kentucky, has left one man injured and another man facing charges. The incident occurred on Sunday night, prompting a response from the Bell County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a social media post shared by the Bell County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a residence on Blue Ridge Church Road at approximately 10:05 p.m. in response to a reported shooting. The victim, who sustained two gunshot wounds, was initially taken to Middlesboro ARH Hospital by a family member. Subsequently, the victim was transferred to another medical facility via AirEvac and was unable to provide a statement to law enforcement.

Upon arriving at the scene, Bell County deputies encountered a 20-year-old suspect identified as Matthew Shelton, a resident of Page. Shelton informed deputies that the victim had fled the residence with his hand behind his back, leading Shelton to believe that he was in imminent danger. Consequently, Shelton discharged his firearm, striking the individual.

As the investigation into the incident continues, deputies arrested Shelton on the scene and charged him with assault in the first degree. He was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Bell County Detention Center. Officials have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing.
