SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — On a fateful Sunday morning on June 16, tragedy struck on Oneida Lake near the pier close to the Waterfront Tavern in the Town of Hastings. Members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol were on patrol when they encountered a distressing situation involving two individuals in the water.
Rescue Efforts and Outcome
During the rescue operation, one of the distressed individuals, identified as Wattie Cappers, 42 years old, was successfully rescued by the Oswego County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol. Cappers was promptly transported to Upstate Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition.
However, the situation took a tragic turn when the second individual in distress, Anthony Davis, 44 years old from Clay, NY, was unable to be rescued in time. Despite the valiant efforts of the Brewerton Fire Department, who arrived at the scene to assist, Davis tragically lost his life. He was pulled from the water by a diver from the Brewerton Fire Department and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Upstate Hospital.

Investigations into the incident revealed that Cappers, Davis, and another male companion were out fishing on Oneida Lake to celebrate Father’s Day. Unfortunately, the fishing trip took a tragic turn when Davis accidentally dropped his keys into the water. In an attempt to retrieve the keys, Davis found himself in distress and unable to make it back to shore.
Seeing his friend in trouble, Cappers bravely jumped into the water to rescue Davis. However, both men found themselves struggling to make it back to safety. It was at this critical moment that the Oswego County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol arrived on the scene in response to the cries for help.
The swift actions of the authorities managed to save one life but were unable to prevent the tragic loss of Anthony Davis. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers that can arise even during seemingly routine activities like fishing.
