A horrific incident unfolded at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan, on Saturday, June 15, when a gunman opened fire on innocent bystanders, leaving nine people injured, including two children.

Details of the Shooting

The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. as the shooter arrived at the splash pad, parked his car, and began firing indiscriminately from the base of the steps leading to the splash pad. He then proceeded to walk up the steps, reload his weapon, and continue shooting from the top of the steps in the splash pad area.

According to police reports, the shooter fired a total of 28 shots into the crowded splash pad, reloading multiple times and using two handguns. Some victims were shot while attempting to flee the scene, as the shooter fled before law enforcement arrived.

Police Response and Victims

An Oakland County sergeant swiftly responded to the scene within minutes of the shooting being reported to 911. Utilizing Live 911 technology, the sergeant arrived at the splash pad within two minutes and immediately began administering aid to the victims, applying tourniquets and providing support.

Among the victims were Micayla and Eric Coughlin, who had just arrived at the splash pad with their two daughters when the gunfire erupted. The couple shielded their children from harm, but sustained a total of seven gunshot wounds. Additionally, a 39-year-old woman and her two sons were also shot, with the woman in critical condition, her 8-year-old son in critical condition, and her 4-year-old son in stable condition.

Other victims include a 30-year-old woman, 30-year-old man, 37-year-old woman, 39-year-old woman, 40-year-old man, and a 78-year-old man.

Identity of the Shooter

The shooter has been identified as Michael William Nash, a 42-year-old resident of Shelby Township. Police recovered a 9mm handgun at the splash pad, registered to Nash. He was later found dead at a mobile home park in Shelby Township, having taken his own life. Authorities believe that Nash lived with his mother, who was not present at the time of the shooting.

Investigation and Possible Motives

Authorities are still investigating the motive behind Nash’s violent actions, as no note, manifesto, or other evidence has been discovered to provide an explanation. The investigation will focus on establishing a timeline of Nash’s activities leading up to and following the shooting.

During a search of Nash’s residence, a rifle was found, prompting concerns of potential further harm. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard highlighted the importance of early intervention in cases involving individuals with severe mental health challenges, emphasizing the need for collaboration between mental health professionals and law enforcement.

In light of the incident, Michigan’s recently enacted Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law has garnered attention. The law allows courts to temporarily restrict individuals deemed a risk to themselves or others from possessing firearms.

Support for Affected Residents

The Rochester Hills Department of Public Services building has been designated as a Family Assistance Center to provide support for those affected by the tragedy. Therapists will be available on weekdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with additional resources accessible via the nurse on call at 800-848-5533.
