Continued Incidents of Child Marriage

Despite strict laws against child marriage in Pakistan, such incidents continue to occur. Similar attempts were recently thwarted in Rajanpur and Thatta, where young girls were being forced into marriages with much older men.

In Rajanpur, Punjab, an 11-year-old girl narrowly escaped being married off to a 40-year-old man. Similarly, in Thatta, a young girl was saved from being forced into a marriage with a 50-year-old landlord, thanks to the timely intervention of the police.

On May 6, another disturbing case emerged in Swat, where a 70-year-old man had married a 13-year-old girl with her father’s consent. The police acted swiftly, arresting the groom, the father, the ‘Nikkah Khwan’, and the witnesses. The minor girl was taken to a hospital for a medical examination.
