Located near the serene Gilgo Beach on Long Island, New York, investigators made a grim discovery of four young women’s hidden remains. The mystery surrounding their identities and the circumstances of their presence here might have remained unsolved if not for a woman named Shannan Gilbert.

The Uncovering of the Gilgo Four

In the wee hours of the morning on 1st May 2010, 23-year-old Shannan Gilbert, working as an escort, made a frantic call to 911 from a neighbourhood near Gilgo Beach.

911 OPERATOR: State Police.

SHANNAN GILBERT: Yeah, there’s somebody after me.

Shannan’s call for help set off a chain of events that would lead to a series of shocking discoveries. As she ran, knocking on doors and screaming for help, the call abruptly ended, leaving Shannan missing without a trace.

Chief of Detectives at the Suffolk County Police Department, Dominick Varrone, led extensive search efforts to locate Shannan. However, months passed with no sign of the missing woman. In December 2010, near Gilgo Beach, a police officer and his K-9 named Blue stumbled upon human remains.

Initially believed to be Shannan Gilbert, the remains turned out to be those of four other young women – Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, collectively known as the Gilgo Four. Each woman, like Shannan, was in her twenties, worked as online escorts, and shared a haunting connection – all were petite and wrapped in burlap, a material commonly found in hunting stores.

Exclusive interviews conducted by “48 Hours” with the families and friends of the Gilgo Four revealed the heart-wrenching impact of these tragic events. Missy Cann, sister of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, vividly recalled the devastating moment when detectives confirmed her sister’s identification as one of the victims found on Ocean Parkway.

Maureen Brainard-Barnes

Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, was the first of the Gilgo Four to disappear. She had been working as an escort in New York City when she vanished in July 2007.

Maureen, a single mother of two, had turned to escort work to make ends meet, eventually disappearing on her way home from a weekend trip to New York City. The details of her disappearance, including a chilling phone call she made from Penn Station, highlighted the danger faced by women in vulnerable situations.

Following Maureen’s disappearance, a tragic pattern emerged as Melissa Barthelemy went missing in July 2009, just a year after Maureen. Melissa, a former hairdresser turned escort, was lured to New York City and vanished. Her family was subjected to terrifying phone calls from a man claiming responsibility for her disappearance.

Melissa Barthelemy

Melissa Barthelemy, 24, went missing in July 2009. In the weeks following her disappearance, her 15-year-old sister was terrorized by a series of frightening phone calls made by a man calling from Melissa’s cell phone. Police believe the man who made these phone calls is, in fact, Melissa’s killer.

The heart-rending accounts of Missy Cann and Lynn Barthelemy, mothers left to mourn the loss of their daughters, underscored the profound impact of these tragedies on the families left behind. Despite the passage of time, the wounds remain fresh for those who knew and loved the Gilgo Four.

As the investigation into the Gilgo Four unfolded, new leads emerged, shedding light on the potential identity of the Long Island serial killer. In July 2023, Suffolk County police commissioner Rodney Harrison made a startling announcement, identifying architect Rex Heuermann as the prime suspect in the case.
