AUBURN, Maine (WGME) — A suspect was shot and killed in a tumultuous scene that unfolded in Maine early Saturday morning, leaving the community shaken and in disbelief, according to authorities.
Reports indicate that multiple houses became engulfed in flames as chaos erupted while law enforcement officers were in pursuit of 43-year-old Leein Hinkley.
“It’s been an intense and tragic morning here in Auburn. Incidents like the one we had to experience today are most frightening for our community,” said Deputy Chief Tim Cougle from the Auburn Police Department.
Residents in the vicinity expressed their shock and concern over the alarming turn of events.
“Definitely disturbing,” said Nathan Goyette, an Auburn resident.
According to police reports, a woman made a frantic 911 call from Russell around 1 a.m., reporting that her partner was involved in a physical altercation with a man later identified as Hinkley, who was attempting to forcibly enter their residence. The whereabouts of the woman’s partner remain unknown at this time.
During the distressing call, dispatchers heard gunshots in the background as the woman managed to escape, with officers later locating her near the scene.
Simultaneously, a property in the area was engulfed in flames, with investigators revealing that Hinkley opened fire on law enforcement officers, resulting in a second residence catching fire.
Hinkley then fled the scene, seeking refuge initially in a garage before eventually taking cover on a nearby rooftop.
“While positioned on the rooftop, he was seen brandishing a firearm,” stated Cougle.
Several hours later, around 5:30 a.m., the Maine State Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team intervened, leading to an encounter that culminated in Hinkley being fatally shot by members of the tactical team.
“Following the exchange, he was shot and killed by Maine State Police Tactical Team members. Troopers Scott Duff and Patrick Hall were involved in the officer-involved shooting,” announced Col. William Ross from the Maine State Police.
The troopers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation. While sustaining injuries during the operation, authorities have refrained from disclosing the extent of their wounds.
Neighbours in the vicinity were forced to seek refuge for several hours as the chaotic scene unfolded.
“I’m very angry that something like this could happen in a place like this,” expressed Dylan Fry, who was visiting a friend in Auburn.
Danielle Philbrook, an Auburn resident, described the sequence of events as “just crazy.”
“We walk our dog down that street like every day,” mentioned Philbrook.
State police disclosed that Hinkley had been recently released on bail merely three days prior to the incident. He had been in custody due to a probation violation, stemming from a 2011 conviction for offences related to domestic violence, aggravated assault, as well as a recent arrest for another domestic violence-related offence.
“Initially, he was detained without bail for a probation violation. Against the objection of the district attorney’s office, the court granted him bail amounting to $1500, accompanied by conditions, including house arrest at a residence in Lewiston,” revealed Ross.
For many, the harrowing ordeal evoked memories of past tragedies.
“It’s extremely terrifying, especially considering the recent events that transpired in the area, you know? Lewiston Strong,” expressed Fry.
Authorities have confirmed that the search for the 911 caller’s partner is ongoing, although they have assured the public that there is no longer an imminent threat.
