CHARSADDA: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police have successfully thwarted an attempt to marry off a 12-year-old girl to a 72-year-old man in Charsadda. The elderly groom, identified as Habib Khan, and the Nikah Khwan were arrested by the authorities.
The incident unfolded when the girl’s father, Alam Syed, agreed to sell his daughter to the elderly man for a sum of Rs 500,000. However, just before the Nikah ceremony could take place, the police intervened and apprehended the groom and the Nikah Khwan. The girl’s father managed to escape the scene, but a case has been registered against him, the 72-year-old man, and the Nikah Khwan under the Child Marriage Act.
Despite the presence of laws aimed at preventing child marriages, such incidents continue to occur. Recent cases in Rajanpur and Thatta have also highlighted the issue, with young girls being forced into marriages with much older men.
In a separate incident in Rajanpur, a shocking case emerged where an 11-year-old girl was being married off to a 40-year-old man. Similarly, in Thatta, a young girl was forced into marriage with a 50-year-old landlord, but timely police intervention saved her from the ordeal.
On another occasion, a 70-year-old man was arrested in Swat for marrying a 13-year-old girl. The police swiftly acted upon receiving information about the forced marriage, apprehending the groom, the girl’s father, the Nikah Khwan, and witnesses. The minor girl was taken to the hospital for medical examination.
These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the prevalence of child marriages in certain communities, despite the legal framework in place to prevent such practices. The swift actions of law enforcement agencies in Charsadda and other regions are vital in safeguarding the rights and well-being of vulnerable young girls.
