A Connecticut state trooper was injured on Friday night when a tractor-trailer collided with her cruiser while she was protecting the scene of another crash on Interstate 84 in Danbury.
The incident took place shortly after 9 p.m. near Exit 8 on the westbound side of I-84. The state police reported that a 31-year-old man from Nuevo Leon, Mexico, was driving the tractor-trailer when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a median guardrail.
Subsequently, the tractor-trailer struck the trooper’s parked cruiser on the shoulder before jackknifing and hitting a GMC Acadia that was travelling in the left lane.
The trooper, who was inside the cruiser at the time of the accident, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Danbury Hospital for treatment. Additionally, a 22-year-old woman from New Milford, who was a passenger in the GMC, also suffered minor injuries. The driver and another passenger in the vehicle were unharmed.
Citations Issued and Environmental Response
The driver of the tractor-trailer was cited for failure to maintain lane and driving too fast for the road conditions. In response to the crash, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection attended to a fuel leak caused by the incident. As a result, the highway had to be closed for approximately three hours for cleanup and investigation purposes.
