Accident – Death – Obituary News : The murder trial of former Migori Governor Okoth Obado in connection to the tragic death of university student Sharon Otieno has finally come to a close after six long years. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga announced the conclusion of the case on Friday, following the testimonies of 42 witnesses.

Lead defence lawyer, Senior Counsel Kioko Kilukumi, wasted no time in informing Justice Cecilia Githua that he would be submitting a plea for no case to answer on behalf of Obado. Kilukumi expressed confidence that the evidence presented during the trial would exonerate his client from any involvement in the murder of Sharon and her unborn baby boy, who tragically lost their lives on the night of September 3, 2018.

On the prosecution side, counsel Gikui Gichuhi and Allen Mulama are pushing for Obado, his former personal assistant Michael Oyamo, and former Migori county employee Caspal Obiero to be put on their defence. They presented compelling evidence suggesting that Oyamo had been in communication with Sharon before her fatal encounter, leading her to a vehicle owned by Obiero’s wife, Olive Odhiambo Oloo, which ultimately transported her to the location where she met her demise.

Lead Investigator Nicholas Ole Sena shed light on the interactions between Sharon and Obado’s family, revealing that the governor’s wife had knowledge of the affair during a trip to London. Additionally, it was disclosed that Obado’s son had been in contact with Sharon, exchanging pictures and messages prior to her untimely death.

Despite the DNA test results confirming Obado as the father of Sharon’s unborn child, there remains a lack of concrete evidence linking him directly to the abduction or murder of the victims. The defence maintains their stance that Obado was not involved in the heinous crimes and should be acquitted.

In a surprising turn of events, Justice Githua has granted Obado permission to travel to China between June 20, 2024, and July 4, 2024. The judge instructed the deputy registrar to facilitate the necessary arrangements for Obado’s trip and ensure the return of his passport upon his arrival back in Kenya.

As the legal proceedings continue, both the defence and prosecution will await further instructions on the virtual submissions for the plea of no case to answer. The accused, Obado, Oyamo, and Obiero, maintain their innocence and are currently out on bond awaiting the next steps in the judicial process.
