A man was fatally shot by deputies in Edinburg, Texas, after allegedly threatening his wife and lunging at officers with a knife on Tuesday evening.
Incident Details
On June 11, 2024, at 6:24 p.m., the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Communications Division received a 911 call from a woman reporting that her father-in-law had stabbed her mother-in-law. Deputies responded to the 6600 block of West Drive in rural Edinburg for an aggravated assault family violence call in progress.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered a man holding a knife and refusing to comply with verbal commands to drop the weapon. Despite attempts to subdue the suspect using a Taser and less-than-lethal rubber shotgun rounds, the man continued to resist. When the suspect lunged at the deputies and threw the knife in their direction, officers fired their duty weapons, fatally wounding him.
Deputies provided life-saving aid until EMS arrived and pronounced the suspect deceased at the scene. The suspect was identified as 51-year-old Ruben Ollarzabal Chairez of Edinburg, Texas. Family members reported no injuries.
Investigation and Background
Investigators learned that Chairez had previously threatened to kill his wife and had a prior family violence arrest in February 2024. Justice of the Peace Andre Maldonado pronounced Chairez’s time of death at 7:00 p.m., and an autopsy was ordered.
The HCSO Officer-Involved Shooting Team, supported by Major Crime Investigators and Crime Scene Specialists, processed the scene. All five deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
