Accident – Death – Obituary News : A former high school volleyball coach in Lawton, Nieko “Nicko” Miranda, has decided to waive his preliminary hearing for charges related to an inappropriate relationship with one of his players. The 43-year-old coach faces a felony count of sexual battery, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Miranda’s lawyer, Lawrence Corrales, declined to comment on the case at this time.

Miranda was charged on March 13 after the mother of the girl involved in the case reported to Lawton Police. She had discovered text messages and inappropriate communication between Miranda and her daughter. A digital analysis of the teen’s phone revealed explicit messages exchanged between Miranda and the student from November 2023 to February 11. The messages included references to meeting in Miranda’s classroom and at his home, as well as sexual discussions and mentions of a romantic relationship.

Prior to these allegations, Miranda had been serving as a computer science teacher and the head girls volleyball coach at Eisenhower High School since June 2022. However, Lawton Public Schools confirmed that Miranda is no longer employed by the district. Following the revelations of the inappropriate relationship, the teen completed her schooling through virtual learning and graduated in May.

In a surprising turn of events, the now 19-year-old girl submitted a motion through Corrales on June 6 to have the no-contact order between her and Miranda lifted. She stated that, being of legal age and having completed high school, she wishes to resume contact with the former coach. As of now, no action has been taken regarding this motion.

Miranda, who was identified as female in Comanche County Detention Center records, has been released on a $30,000 bond since March 15. The conditions of his bond include no contact with the teen, prohibition from working at any school or being on school property, and requirement to abide by all laws. A formal arraignment for Miranda is scheduled for June 27 before District Judge Scott D. Meaders, with the case expected to be presented during the October/November jury trial docket..
