An 8-year-old girl from Missouri tragically became “ill and unresponsive” on a SkyWest flight to Chicago on Thursday and was later pronounced dead, according to authorities.
The flight originated from Joplin, Missouri, and was en route to Chicago before making an emergency landing in Peoria, Illinois.
“Her family promptly alerted the flight crew of her condition, and they swiftly began providing assistance. Upon arrival in Peoria, she was found not breathing and without a pulse,” stated the Peoria County Coroner’s Office.
The young girl was identified as Sydney Weston from Carl Junction, Missouri, as confirmed by the coroner’s office.
The aircraft landed at the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport at around 7 a.m. due to a medical emergency, as indicated in a statement from the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office on their Facebook page.
Emergency responders, including deputies and the Air National Guard, made efforts to save the child’s life, but she was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.
SkyWest Airlines, in a statement to NBC News, verified that the child was on board flight 5121, operating as United Express, from Joplin to Chicago O’Hare International Airport when a passenger fell ill, prompting the diversion to Peoria.
Upon landing, the girl was attended to by paramedics for her medical distress. SkyWest expressed gratitude for the quick response of their crew members and the medical team who met the aircraft.
The young girl, whose autopsy is scheduled for Friday, passed away shortly after 8 a.m., as stated by the coroner’s office.
The family of Sydney Weston was not immediately available for comment on Friday.
