An 8-year-old girl from Missouri tragically passed away during a SkyWest flight to Chicago on Thursday. The young girl, identified as Sydney Weston from Carl Junction, Missouri, became “ill and unresponsive” while on the flight, which had taken off from Joplin, Missouri, en route to Chicago.
The situation escalated quickly, prompting the flight crew to make an emergency landing in Peoria, Illinois. Despite the swift response from the flight personnel, the child was not breathing and had no pulse upon landing in Peoria, as confirmed by a statement from the Peoria County Coroner’s Office.
Emergency services were immediately mobilised upon landing at the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport, including deputies and the Air National Guard. Despite their best efforts in administering life-saving measures, the young girl tragically could not be revived and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
SkyWest Airlines, in a statement to NBC News, confirmed that the incident occurred on flight 5121, operating as United Express, from Joplin to Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The airline expressed gratitude for the prompt response of their crew members and the medical personnel who attended to the situation upon landing in Peoria.
The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office posted on their Facebook page that the girl’s autopsy is scheduled for Friday following her untimely passing shortly after 8 a.m.
As of now, the family of Sydney Weston has not been reachable for comment, as they grapple with the tragic loss of their young daughter.
