JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In a courtroom filled with emotion, a former music teacher at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts was sentenced to 10 years in prison today after pleading guilty to sexual misconduct with a minor. Jeffrey Clayton’s guilty plea came after he was arrested last year for sex crimes involving a 16-year-old student.

During Friday’s court hearing, the judge delivered Clayton’s sentence, emphasizing, “You should have known better, you were the adult here.” The sentencing was a difficult moment for many, especially for the girls who testified against him. Former students and a school board member expressed relief at finally getting closure.

Clayton, who was the former vocal chair at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, will serve a 10-year prison sentence followed by 3 years of probation. As he was led away in handcuffs, the courtroom was filled with a mix of emotions.

One of the witnesses, identified as J.C., shared, “It has been a long time in the coming, for sure. I am just so happy that we’re able to finally put it mostly to rest, and that he is somewhere where we know he cannot hurt anyone else.”

Another witness, former DA student Shyla Jenkins, described Clayton’s actions as “disgusting” and “creepy.” Jenkins, who graduated in 2002, expressed shock at how long the inappropriate behavior had been going on. She also highlighted the courage of the victims who came forward to share their experiences.

Dr. Lori Hershey, a school board member, reacted to Clayton’s sentence, saying, “It was an emotional day in the courtroom. But we have a responsibility to keep students safe, and I applaud the courage of the women who spoke up.” She reassured the community that the district is working to improve safety measures.

As part of his sentence, Clayton will have to comply with sexual offender conditions, including restrictions on interacting with children. This is seen as a crucial step in ensuring that he is unable to harm others in the future.
