A tragic incident unfolded in Vancouver on June 8, resulting in the death of a man following an officer-involved shooting. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office recently released details of the critical incident that took place on Southeast Columbia Way.

Authorities responded to reports of a man accompanied by an aggressive German Shepherd, which had reportedly bitten at least one person. The man, identified as 43-year-old Vadim Sashchenko, was walking northbound on Columbia St. with the German Shepherd on a leash when police approached him.

The situation escalated when Sashchenko displayed what appeared to be a firearm and pointed it at Officer Brandon Riedel. In response, Officer Riedel fired four shots as Sashchenko tossed the gun to the ground. Despite attempts by officers to administer CPR, Sashchenko was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fortunately, no police officers sustained injuries during the incident. The German Shepherd was safely taken to the Humane Society for further care. Both Officer Riedel and Officer Stuart Drynan, who witnessed the confrontation, have been placed on Critical Incident Leave.

The Southwest Washington Independent Investigative Response Team (SWIIRT), under the direction of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
