Accident – Death – Obituary News : Evansville, Ind. (WFIE) – Two individuals have been taken into custody by the Evansville Police Department after a distressing incident involving a 4-year-old child in an apartment. The authorities were alerted around 9 a.m. to the 4500 block of Spring Valley Road regarding a female who was found unconscious.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the young child, who was unresponsive and tragically beyond help. The child was described as cold to the touch, prompting the Evansville Fire Department to immediately begin efforts to revive her. She was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where medical professionals are working tirelessly to sustain her life, although she is currently displaying minimal brain activity.

The child’s mother, identified as 23-year-old Destiny F. Rhoades, was reportedly at work during the incident and returned home upon receiving the distressing news. Inside the apartment, authorities found Rhoades’ 16-year-old boyfriend, along with three other adult females who also reside in the same residence. All four adults were subsequently taken to EPD headquarters for questioning, with the 16-year-old not being interviewed due to his age.

During the investigation, Rhoades mentioned that she had left for work around 7:00 a.m. and believed her daughter to be asleep at that time. However, a roommate disclosed that the child had visible bruises on her body, particularly around her neck area, and a human bite mark on her forearm, which had been noticed the day before.

Further revelations came to light during interviews, as the 16-year-old boyfriend admitted to biting the child in retaliation for being bitten first. Another roommate recounted an incident where the child appeared disoriented and nauseous while under Rhoades’ care the previous evening. Shockingly, none of these distressing occurrences were reported to authorities or medical professionals when they happened.

Rhoades has since been taken into custody and booked into the Vanderburgh County Detention Center, facing charges of neglect of a dependent, contributing to delinquency of a minor, and invasion of privacy. The 16-year-old male has also been arrested and placed in the Youth Care Center, charged with serious bodily harm and providing false information. This harrowing case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting in safeguarding the well-being of vulnerable individuals..
