Washington State Route 99, a 49-mile highway stretching from Fife to Everett and passing through the Seattle-Tacoma area, has been identified as the state’s most dangerous route.

A recent study conducted by The Barber Law Firm, a Texas-based legal team, analyzed data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to determine the deadliest roads in every state. The study utilized data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System to calculate the average number of fatalities between 2018 and 2022.

Washington’s Most Dangerous Roads

Here are the top five deadliest roads in Washington and the average number of deaths per year:

  1. State Route 99 (16) – Also known as Pacific Highway
  2. State Route 20 (9) – The North Cascades highway, spanning 436 miles
  3. State Route 7 (8.4) – Connecting Morton to Tacoma
  4. State Route 167 (6.6) – A 28-mile highway from Tacoma to Renton
  5. State Route 14 (6.2) – Running from Vancouver to Plymouth along the Columbia River

Understanding State Route 99

The study revealed that between 2018 and 2022, there were 76 car accidents and over 80 fatalities recorded on State Route 99 in Washington, with 20 deaths occurring in 2022 alone.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation’s crash data report, there have been four fatal car accidents and 23 suspected serious injury accidents on SR-99 in 2024.

The tragic incident that occurred on Wednesday afternoon on State Route 7 near Spanaway, where a 53-year-old Roy man lost his life in a vehicle collision due to failure to yield, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of Washington’s roadways.

Authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution, adhere to traffic laws, and prioritize safety while navigating the state’s highways.
