Opening statements were presented in a homicide trial before a jury in the courtroom of DC Superior Court Judge Michael O’Keefe on the 12th of June.

Beysean Jones, aged 29, faces two charges of first-degree murder while armed and assault with intent to kill while armed for his alleged involvement in the fatal shootings of Ronald Brown, aged 19, and Tijuan Wilson, aged 41, which occurred on 27th July 2022 in the 4300 block of 4th Street, SE. Another victim sustained gunshot wounds but survived.

Prosecutors claim that Jones carried out the killings in retaliation for a shooting that occurred five days earlier. They allege that on 22nd July 2022, Brown and Jones had a dispute at a local tobacco shop, following which Jones followed Brown while he was with his family.

The prosecution suggested that after Brown picked up his family in the 4300 block of Livingston Street, SE, shots were fired at Jones’ car with no injuries.

However, Charles Murdter, Jones’ defense attorney, argued that there is no evidence or eyewitnesses linking Jones to the shooting on 27th July. Jones was reportedly unaware of any motive or person behind the shooting on 22nd July.

During the trial, prosecutors called family members of the victims to the stand to provide insight into the lives of Brown and Wilson before their tragic deaths.

Ronald Brown, a 19-year-old high school student, had aspirations of becoming an electrician.

Tijuan Wilson, an innocent bystander, was standing outside his car with his brother and wife when he was fatally shot.

Police reports indicate gunfire at 7:56 PM on 22nd July, with nine bullet casings and one fragment recovered at the scene in the 4300 block of Livingston Street, SE. Jones was not present when police arrived.

The prosecution claimed that Jones had “turned that apartment into a war zone.” Surveillance footage showed a car believed to be Brown’s passing by Jones’ vehicle.

Although the shooting was not captured on camera, the timing of the cars passing each other in the footage coincided with ShotSpotter alerts. Bullet casings recovered matched the location of the passing cars, with all rounds fired from a .40 caliber gun.

Additionally, Jones’ girlfriend and her mother testified that one of the cars in the footage belonged to Jones, with damage to the bumper consistent with the shooting incident on 22nd July.

Jones’ girlfriend’s mother mentioned that Jones had borrowed her car, which was identified in surveillance footage from both the tobacco shop and the scene of the shooting on 4300 block of Livingston Street, SE.

The trial is set to resume on 13th June.
