UPSHUR COUNTY, Texas (KETK) – A man was arrested in Upshur County after allegedly scamming an elderly resident out of over $70,000. The arrest was made by officials on Wednesday.

According to reports, an 85-year-old man was contacted on June 9 by an individual claiming to be from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The elderly man was convinced to pay the scammer after being falsely informed that he had warrants for his arrest.

The Upshur County Sheriff’s Office stated, “The gentleman turned over $70,000 to the scammers over several days, but became suspicious when they re-contacted him demanding more money.”

On June 12, officials apprehended the suspect, identified as Davan Patel, 38, from Melissa, when he attempted to collect additional funds from the victim’s residence.

Patel was taken into custody and charged with theft over $30,000 but less than $150,000 from an elderly individual. His bond was set at $1 million on Friday.

Sheriff Larry Web of Upshur County advised individuals to seek assistance from law enforcement if they are approached by someone requesting money to avoid falling victim to scams.
