A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Alabama as a 13-year-old boy, identified as Aston Starkey, was found starved to death in a hotel room. The boy’s mother, Serena Starkey, has been charged with abuse and neglect in connection with his untimely demise.
Authorities were alerted to the situation when Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to a distress call at the Extended Stay America off US 280 on March 2 at 7.30 am. Aston Starkey was rushed to Grandview Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The autopsy revealed that he had Down’s Syndrome.
Shelby County Coroner Lina Evans confirmed that the cause of death was malnutrition and dehydration compounded by neglect. The medical examiner’s office ruled the manner of death as a homicide, sparking a thorough investigation into the tragic incident.
Law enforcement officials issued a warrant for Serena Starkey, who has been on the run since June 7. The 53-year-old mother is described as a white female and is currently wanted for questioning in connection with her son’s death.
It was revealed that the child and his mother had only been residing in Birmingham for a year, having previously moved around frequently. The possibility that they lived in Montgomery, Alabama before their time in Birmingham has also been raised by investigators.
The death of Aston Starkey marks the 67th homicide in Birmingham this year, highlighting the urgency of addressing the underlying issues that led to this tragic loss of life.
