FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – A 20-year-old Fort Wayne man is facing charges of attempted murder after allegedly shooting a Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) officer. This incident occurred on Thursday night, and it has been revealed that the suspect was already out on bond for felony charges in Whitley County.

Background of the Incident

The events unfolded when FWPD officers responded to reports of a burglary at a residence in the 4700 Block of Holton Avenue. Upon arrival, they encountered an armed individual, later identified as Zar Ni Myint, aged 20.

According to police reports, Myint fired a fully-automatic handgun at one of the FWPD officers, resulting in the officer sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. Myint himself was also injured during the altercation but has since been discharged from the hospital and is now in custody at the Allen County Jail.

Capture and Previous Offences

Following the shooting, Myint attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by law enforcement officers in the 1300 Block of East Fairfax Avenue. It has come to light that Myint was previously involved in a police chase in Whitley County, where he faced charges of resisting law enforcement.

Court documents reveal that Myint was accused of evading law enforcement during a pursuit in Whitley County last October. Data retrieved from his mobile phone placed him in Pierceton, near Warsaw, on the night of the incident. This corresponds with the night when a Whitley County Sheriff’s detective engaged in a high-speed chase with a Mercedes driver.

Further Details on Previous Offences

During the chase, the driver of the Mercedes allegedly drove recklessly, going against traffic and endangering other road users. The pursuit ended after stop sticks were deployed, causing the driver to flee into nearby woods. Although the driver managed to escape that day, a “sawed-off AR-style rifle” was recovered from the vehicle.

Myint was released on a $20,000 bond following the Whitley County incident and was due to appear in court for a pretrial conference on the resisting law enforcement charge. However, he is now facing additional charges, including attempted murder and possession of a machine gun, in connection with the recent shooting involving the FWPD officer.
