Nigel Thomas Sanders : “Houston Inmate Escape: Nigel Sanders Captured in Harrison County Search”

An escaped inmate, Nigel Thomas Sanders, who authorities say attempted to carjack a district attorney’s office employee at knifepoint, was apprehended early Friday morning by the Harris County, Texas Sheriff’s Office.

Sanders was captured at his mother’s residence in east Harris County around 3 a.m. by the Violent Offenders Fugitive Task Force, bringing an end to a 12-hour search for the dangerous individual.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that Sanders will face new charges of aggravated robbery and escape in relation to Thursday’s incident. Additionally, two more individuals, identified as Sanders’ mother and sister, were arrested for hindering apprehension.

During the capture, Sanders reportedly resisted arrest, prompting officials to deploy a Taser before taking him into custody. He is currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.

Authorities revealed that multiple leads were followed, with several law enforcement agencies collaborating to search various addresses for the suspect.

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg expressed gratitude that the employee involved in the carjacking attempt was unharmed. Ogg affirmed her commitment to prosecuting Sanders and seeking justice in the case.

The incident began when Sanders escaped from a downtown courthouse around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. He was in court facing charges of burglary and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Upon escaping, Sanders approached a district attorney’s office employee at knifepoint in the building’s sallyport. After a brief struggle, Sanders fled on foot, prompting a lockdown of the jail complex.

Sanders later attempted to evade capture by jumping into a nearby bayou, but was eventually located at his mother’s residence in east Harris County.

The University of Houston-Downtown issued an alert during the search, advising students and staff to take safety precautions. The situation was later resolved, and normalcy was restored on campus.

Sanders, known to have associates in the Cloverleaf, Texas area, was found in close proximity to this location upon his capture.
