Chapoth Bafel Gak Paul Deng, 29, was walking home from the shops on Friday, June 7, when she was struck by a car while crossing Stud Rd, Dandenong, around 9 pm. The impact of the collision threw Chapoth into the middle of the road, where she was hit by a second vehicle. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Chapoth succumbed to her injuries.
Originally from Sudan, Chapoth had been living in Australia since 2004 and was a loving mother to three young children. Her family is devastated by the loss, with her aunt Mariya Ngung Deng describing her as “beautiful inside and out.” The family is struggling to come to terms with her untimely death, especially her children, who are left with many unanswered questions.
A fundraiser has been set up to support Chapoth’s family during this difficult time. While one of the drivers involved in the incident stopped at the scene and cooperated with the authorities, the other driver reportedly fled the scene. However, a 21-year-old man later handed himself in at Cranbourne Police Station in connection with the incident. He was interviewed by the police but released pending further investigations, with no charges laid as of yet.
