Accident – Death – Obituary News : Grand County Sheriff’s Office K9 uncovers significant drug haul during routine traffic stop

In a recent operation, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit made a substantial drug bust during a routine traffic stop on Tuesday evening. The K9 unit detected 25 gross grams of fentanyl and 78.1 gross grams of methamphetamine in a vehicle that was pulled over by a deputy on Highway 34 at milepost 5 at around 9:45 p.m.

The traffic stop initially occurred due to an equipment failure on the vehicle. However, when the K9 unit was deployed for drug detection, it quickly alerted the deputies to the presence of illegal substances. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the fentanyl and methamphetamine.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 35-year-old Richard Lawing from Grand Lake, was promptly arrested on multiple charges. These charges include unlawful possession of a Schedule I/II controlled substance, unlawful intent to distribute Schedule I/II controlled substance, violation of a protection order, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving without a valid driver’s license, and driving a defective vehicle.

Additionally, the passenger in the vehicle, 25-year-old Cameron Gordanier from Buena Vista, was also arrested for an active warrant out of Chaffee County for failure to comply.

Sheriff Brett Schroetlin of Grand County expressed his satisfaction with the operation, stating, “This case along with another incident resulted in over 200 grams of illegal drugs being recovered by our Patrol Deputies and K9 teams on a Tuesday evening in Grand County. The Sheriff’s Office remains committed to keeping these drugs out of our community through strict enforcement and holding these offenders accountable.”

The successful drug bust highlights the effectiveness of the Grand County Sheriff’s Office in combating drug trafficking and illegal substance abuse in the region. The swift action taken by law enforcement officers underscores their dedication to maintaining the safety and well-being of the community.
