SALISBURY — An individual has been apprehended after law enforcement officers stated that they engaged in a pursuit that ended in a collision with a tree, causing the vehicle to ignite.

The incident commenced at around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, when a deputy pulled over a car on the northbound side of Interstate 85 for exceeding the speed limit, as relayed by Chief Deputy Jason Owens, a representative for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. Initially complying with the deputy’s instructions, the driver subsequently accelerated away.

The vehicle veered onto Long Ferry Road before turning onto Leonard Road, where it veered off the road and collided with the trees in the 1200 block, according to Captain Wesley Smith, who oversees the patrol division of the sheriff’s office. Following the crash, the vehicle caught fire with both occupants still inside, added Smith.

Deputies assisted both the male driver and a female passenger in exiting the vehicle before they received medical attention from EMS personnel and were transported to the hospital. Following a brief hospital stay, the driver, identified as 23-year-old Malik Tai Douglas, attempted to abscond from the medical facility and was subsequently apprehended by deputies.

Smith highlighted that the passenger sustained injuries that were not deemed severe and characterized her as a victim, noting her repeated attempts to persuade Douglas to halt during the incident.

Douglas has been charged with felony evasion, driving with a revoked licence, reckless driving, speeding, and failing to stop for sirens.

He has been confined at the Rowan County Detention Center without the option for bail. Douglas was previously out on bail for a felony evasion charge from Guilford County dating back to September 2023.
