Jun. 13—CUBA, N.M. — The picturesque Northern New Mexico village of Cuba was bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun as residents from Cuba and surrounding communities gathered for a poignant memorial on Wednesday evening.

Friends and family members of 18-year-old Trent Greene, a recent graduate of Cuba High School and a beloved student athlete from Lindrith, came together to share cherished memories of the young man whose life was tragically cut short earlier this month.

Greene was discovered fatally shot off a rural road near Lindrith, and authorities have yet to identify a suspect in the case. Reports suggest that his death may have been the result of a confrontation that turned violent following a rodeo event in Lindrith.

At the moving vigil, dozens of teenagers donned matching black T-shirts emblazoned with the number “5,” symbolizing Greene’s football jersey number, and a photo of him in his graduation attire.

Close friends Payton Binion and Liliana Maestas, both 18, spoke fondly of their deep connection with Greene, reminiscing about their shared childhood experiences in various villages in the area.

Binion and Maestas organised the vigil to provide solace and support to the grieving community and Greene’s family in the wake of his untimely passing.

Described as a dedicated athlete who participated in football, basketball, track, and cross-country, Greene had a passion for fishing at Abiquiú Lake, where he would spend hours indulging in his favourite pastime.

Friends recalled his infectious laughter and his willingness to go above and beyond to lift the spirits of those around him.

In the days following his tragic death, Maestas and Binion found solace in fishing trips as they fondly remembered their dear friend.

Many attendees at the vigil spoke of Greene’s strong work ethic and his unwavering commitment to helping others in the community, whether through his work at the family store or by assisting with ranch work.

Greene’s aspirations for the future were ambitious, with dreams of continuing his football career, achieving financial success, travelling the world, and owning a classic 1968 Chevrolet Camaro.

Binion affectionately described Greene as a lively individual who loved to dance and exuded boundless energy in any setting.

As night fell, over 250 people at the gathering held candles while Binion delivered a heartfelt eulogy for her friend. The group reflected on Greene’s life through a montage of photos and videos capturing his joyful moments.

Investigation into Greene’s Death

Despite the outpouring of support at the memorial, the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office has yet to make any arrests in connection with Greene’s tragic passing.

Details from a search warrant related to the investigation shed light on the events leading up to Greene’s death, suggesting a violent altercation that escalated into a shootout following a local rodeo.

Witnesses reported a confrontation between two groups of men at a Lindrith fairgrounds, where gunfire was exchanged, prompting a swift law enforcement response.

Though no criminal charges have been filed against individuals involved in the altercation, investigations are ongoing to uncover the truth behind Greene’s untimely demise.

Deputies discovered a vehicle with signs of damage parked at Greene’s family business, Regina Mercantile, further complicating the narrative surrounding his death.

As authorities continue to piece together the events of that fateful night, the community remains united in their quest for justice and closure in the wake of this senseless tragedy.
