PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The man who was fatally shot by Vancouver police over the weekend after allegedly pointing a gun at officers while accompanied by a German shepherd has been identified as 43-year-old Vadim V. Sashchenko.

The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Sashchenko succumbed to “multiple gunshot wounds of the torso” on June 8 when he was shot on a public sidewalk in Vancouver.

Incident Details

On June 8, the Vancouver Police Department reported that the shooting took place in the vicinity of West 4th Street and Columbia. The incident unfolded around 1:45 p.m. when authorities received reports of a man with a gun and a “hostile German shepherd” that had escaped and bitten at least one individual. By 3 p.m., police had located the man and the dog, and witnessed the dog attempting to attack a passerby.

Subsequently, the man allegedly aimed a gun at one of the officers, prompting the officer to open fire, resulting in the man’s death. Following standard procedure, two Vancouver police officers were placed on paid administrative leave. The officers were equipped with body cameras during the encounter, and the footage will be reviewed and released at a later stage.

Animal Welfare

Authorities managed to gain control of the German shepherd as well, which was handed over to the non-profit organisation I Paw’d It Forward before being transferred to the Humane Society.
