Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Las Vegas (KLAS) — The tragic death of a woman while swimming in a gym pool in Las Vegas earlier this year has prompted significant changes in lifeguard requirements at pools across southern Nevada, according to officials from the Southern Nevada Health District.

The incident, which took place at a Las Vegas Athletic Club (LVAC) facility near the intersection of Decatur Boulevard and Tropical Parkway in North Las Vegas on February 4th, was captured on security camera footage. The video footage shows the woman, identified as Leticia Triplett, 58, from North Las Vegas, struggling in the pool for around 9 minutes.

After 8 minutes of being motionless in the water, another customer who was in a separate pool at the facility noticed Triplett and pulled her out of the water. CPR was initiated by the customer, and an LVAC employee eventually responded after approximately 20 minutes of the woman being in distress.

Although the Clark County Coroner’s Office ruled Triplett’s cause of death as drowning, LVAC disputes this claim, citing hypertensive cardiovascular disease and obesity as contributing factors. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety protocols in place at gyms and pools in the Las Vegas valley.

As a result of this tragic event and subsequent investigations, the Southern Nevada Health District has revoked the lifeguard exemption that allowed gyms like LVAC to monitor pool activities through video feeds rather than having a physical lifeguard present. The decision was made after multiple instances of non-compliance and safety breaches were identified during inspections.

Since the exemption was granted in 2020, there have been 29 pool closures at 21 locations due to failures to meet safety requirements. These included the lack of active remote monitoring of pool areas and documented walk-throughs by staff members.

Several gyms, including EōS Fitness and UFC FIT, have either resumed operations with approved lifeguard plans or are awaiting approval for their revised safety protocols. These locations are spread across Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Henderson.
