A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after being found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a fatal collision outside Yountville on Oct. 17, 2020.

During a hearing at Napa County Superior Court in Napa, Judge Elia Ortiz handed down the sentence to Mauricio Aguilar, who was convicted of second-degree murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated following a trial on May 15. The victim, identified as 87-year-old Constantine Tsavalas, a Yountville resident, tragically lost his life in the incident.

Napa County Deputy District Attorney Katie Susemihl expressed the profound impact of Aguilar’s actions on the victim’s family and friends, stating that “Mr. Aguilar’s actions led to irreparable loss and suffering.” The sentencing was described as a solemn acknowledgment of the devastation caused by the fatal collision.

The fatal incident took place at the intersection of Highway 29 and Hoffman Lane, less than a mile south of Yountville, at around 3 p.m. Aguilar, driving south on Highway 29, collided with Tsavalas, who was turning onto the highway from Hoffman Lane in a Nissan Pathfinder.

Prosecutors revealed that Aguilar was driving at a speed of at least 86 mph with a blood alcohol content of 0.204, which is almost three times the legal limit of 0.08. This marked Aguilar’s third DUI conviction within a span of about 16 years.

Prior to the fatal collision, Aguilar had been involved in two previous DUI incidents. The first occurred when he struck a parked car on Kansas Avenue in Napa, while the second took place on Jan. 27, 2019, when Aguilar collided with a power pole and his vehicle caught fire in front of the California Highway Patrol office on Golden Gate Drive in Napa.
