Accident – Death – Obituary News : A Breckenridge resident has been handed a 14-year prison sentence after being found guilty of reckless manslaughter and first-degree criminal trespass in connection to the death of his roommate in 2019.

Miles Fernando Tovar, 40, was convicted by a jury on March 8 for the tragic incident that took place on November 6, 2019. The Breckenridge Police Department responded to a call reporting shots fired at a residence along the 1000 block of Grandview. Upon arrival, they discovered Tovar with a gunshot wound to the leg and his roommate, Brendan Rye, who had sustained fatal injuries. Rye, a recent transplant from Florida, tragically succumbed to his injuries at Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, where it was determined that he died from manual strangulation.

The altercation between Tovar and Rye reportedly escalated during a dinner gathering at their shared condo, where they were renovating the property as subcontractors. Tovar, who had consumed a significant amount of alcohol, was asked to leave by the condo owner but kept returning. Rye attempted to intervene on multiple occasions, leading to a physical confrontation that ultimately turned deadly.

Following the incident, a warrant was issued for Tovar’s arrest in February 2022. He evaded authorities for several months before eventually turning himself in to the U.S. Marshals Service in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in October 2022. Tovar was subsequently sentenced to 12 years in the Department of Corrections for manslaughter and an additional two years for trespass, with the sentences to be served consecutively, totaling 14 years behind bars. He was credited for the 598 days he had already served.

District Attorney Heidi McCollum praised the Breckenridge Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service for their efforts in securing justice for Brendan Rye and his loved ones. She expressed hope that the sentencing would provide a sense of closure and the beginning of a healing process for the victim’s family and friends.

The tragic events leading to Tovar’s imprisonment serve as a somber reminder of the consequences of alcohol-fueled altercations and the importance of conflict resolution in a peaceful manner. The community of Breckenridge mourns the loss of Brendan Rye and stands in solidarity with those affected by this senseless act of violence..
