Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Newly published law enforcement body camera footage provides a chilling glimpse into the moments following a tragic incident where a 41-year-old woman in Florida was fatally attacked by a nearly 14-foot-long alligator in September.

The footage, acquired from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) by Fox 13, captures the swift response of first responders as they arrive at a roadside canal in Largo, Florida, and ultimately resort to fatally shooting the aggressive gator with a rifle.

A bystander, Jamarcus Bullard, was the first to stumble upon the distressing scene, alerting law enforcement upon witnessing the alligator carrying what appeared to be human body parts in its mouth.

“I noticed it had a body in its mouth, like a lower torso, so once I saw that, I ran straight to the fire department and got them, they confirmed it was a body,” Bullard recounted the harrowing experience to the station at the time.

The victim was later identified as Sabrina Peckham, an unhoused woman who had been residing at a makeshift campsite situated less than 50 feet away from the canal in Pinellas County. Her family had last seen her the day prior to the fatal encounter.

“Up over here is the camp where her ID was found,” an FWC officer can be heard saying on the footage as he inspects the trash-strewn campsite. “There doesn’t appear to be any signs of an alligator having come up in here.”

Officers utilized ropes and chains to extract the gator from the canal, subsequently having to surgically open the reptile to recover some of Peckham’s remains.

The tragic incident occurred in McKay Creek, a waterway connecting Ridgecrest Lake and Taylor Lake, with the latter being drained as part of a maintenance initiative.

In a tragic incident in 2022, an individual lost their life to an alligator attack while diving in Taylor Lake to retrieve a frisbee, prompting enhanced safety measures in the area.

The site where Peckham was fatally attacked is now encased by fencing and signs, serving as a somber reminder of the rare but devastating encounters between humans and alligators in Pinellas County.

Over the past decades, alligators have claimed the lives of three individuals, including Peckham, within the region, as reported by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
