Authorities have revealed the identity of the man who was fatally shot in an officer-involved incident in Missoula on May 14. Ravalli County Sheriff and Coroner Steve Holton confirmed that 32-year-old Christopher Brian Couts from Shasta Lake, California was the individual who lost his life in the shooting.

The tragic event unfolded around 2 a.m. when law enforcement attempted to stop a driver, later identified as Couts, suspected of driving under the influence in the 700 block of South Orange Street. Instead of complying with the officers, Couts chose to flee in his vehicle before abandoning it and attempting to escape on foot. He was apprehended near the 800 block of South Fourth Street West approximately an hour later.

According to Missoula Police Department spokeswoman Whitney Bennett, Couts resisted arrest and brandished a firearm, prompting the officers to take action. The incident is currently under investigation by the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

Following the completion of the investigation, the findings will be handed over to the Missoula County Attorney’s Office for a Coroner’s Inquest. The Ravalli County Sheriff’s Office has been tasked with conducting the coroner’s investigation on behalf of the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office.
