A mother from Butte County, identified as Christy Ann Scarbrough, 40, of Durham, was arrested last month following the tragic death of her infant from a fentanyl overdose. The incident occurred almost a year ago, but authorities in Chico took action after a lengthy investigation.
The Chico Police Department was alerted on July 6, 2023, when the mother rushed her 1-year-old child to Enloe Medical Center. Tragically, the child did not survive and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Upon responding to the scene, law enforcement officials discovered fentanyl drug paraphernalia near the sleeping area of the child, prompting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
After conducting interviews with family members and gathering evidence, detectives concluded that Scarbrough had been using fentanyl both before and after the tragic incident. Substantial proof was found linking the mother to the drug paraphernalia located in close proximity to where the child slept, leading to the issuance of an arrest warrant on May 30.
Scarbrough was subsequently apprehended and charged on June 3 with felony child cruelty resulting in death, along with an additional enhancement related to injuries leading to the child’s demise. She is currently being held in Butte County jail without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 20 to address the charges brought against her.
